Filipinos are living more longer but in poor health as the Philippines nears a DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION that leads Filipino to an aging population, the COMMISSION ON POPULATION (PopCom) said yesterday. POPCOM executive director "Juan Antonio Perez III" said that older Filipinos are much expected to account for 10% of the population by year 2025, up from current 6-7%.
According to Juan Antonio Perez, the life span of Filipinos is now longer sixty seven for males and seventy two for females due to modern technology.
Their quality of living, however did not improve. Perez said by 2025-2030, the Philippines population would start to age. At present, there are around 7,000,000 Filipinos who are Seniors, or aged sixty and above.
We can say our population is not yet aged.
We are still a young citizens but we are on the boundary of a DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION STAGE OF AN AGING POPULATION
In 1970 the life span for Filipino males and females were 57.5 and 61.6 respectively.
People are living more longer but in poorer health and SOCIO ECONOMIC CONDITIONS.
They are only partially reaping the benefits of much better health and social conditions.
Based on the report of the (UPPI) University of the Philippines Population Institute titled the FUTURE AGING IN THE PHILIPPINES: DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS, HUMAN CAPITAL and HEALTH STATUS, there was a big increase in number of older Filipinos in the past decade.
The Population 60 years and more than or senior citizen in the Philippines rise from 3.200,000 in 1990 to 4,600,000 in year 2000, then 6,200,000 in year 2010.
In 1960, 4.3% of the population was composed of senior citizens and this rose to 4.6% in year 1970, 5.3% in year 1980 and year 1990, 5.4% in year 1995, 6% in year 2000 and 6.8% in year 2010. Perez also said that the government has 10 years to come up with programs for the elders.
He underscored that an aging population entails various elderly related issue like rehabilitations, depressions, daily activity and health care.
The expert said that older persons need the government to help them as they will be the poorest members of the population due to their age for not having a suitable jobs for them and because of their pensions are not enough for them.
Perez also sited that the need to also come up with health programs for men as existing programs are focused only to women and children.
